Harry Hearn, an Associate at Per Ardua Associates, is preparing to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in December, to raise money for two mental health charities.
On 12th December, Harry and his fellow “Oardacity” crew members, Alex Soskin, Ed Batchelor & Tom Phillips, will set off in their 28-foot rowing boat in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The endurance race covers 3,000 miles from the Canaries to Antigua, and is considered to be the world’s toughest rowing race.
The team, which has been training for two years, aims to raise awareness and funds for two mental health charities: Mind and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation.
“We will be rowing 2 hours on and 2 hours off in rotation, pushing ourselves to our mental and physical limits all to raise much needed awareness and funds for our Charities. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is a race like no other. It is an endurance race across one of the world’s most dangerous oceans. Enduring sleep deprivation, dehydration, huge calorie deficits, hallucinations, salt sores, 60ft waves and physical and mental exhaustion as we navigate our way across one of the busiest shipping zones in the world. Our ambition is winning the race and breaking the World Record of 29 days and 15hrs,” says Harry.
Mind provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation is an international NGO, dedicated to serving the world’s oppressed and marginalised children. The charity is dedicated to serving the physical, medical, educational and emotional needs of vulnerable children.
“We are incredibly passionate about driving change around the stigma and taboo that surrounds mental health. We want to increase the awareness of these two great charities and raise as much money as possible for them. Be it through anxiety, depression, isolation, domestic violence, substance use, eating disorders, financial stress and grief, the mental health impacts of Covid 19 through 2020 are unimaginable and will outlast the virus. We are determined as ever to support the men, women and children whose mental well-being is suffering each day!”
